Here is a proposal to change that: 9 teams make the playoff instead of the current 8. On the first playoff date, the 9th place team plays a single game at the 8th place team stadium. The winner advances to play the first place team in a single game on the second playoff date at the first place team's stadium. Winner advances as usual. The SS winner gets the advantage of not having to travel for the first round. The 9th place team doesn't get a home playoff game, but…

How about those Danish Van Houtens? What, you're telling me you didn't stick with 'The Simpsons' through season 19?Guess I'd have to call that a cromulent decision. If you read those last three seconds and your brain didn't turn into a puddle of chocolate pudding, you were probably able to deduce that I don't have a whole lot to offer for Wednesday's USMNT friendly against Denmark in Aarhus. 22 Nov 2009 | 1:28 pm
It’s been a nice return to club football this weekend after all 32 countries are now locked in & booked for South Africa next Summer. What a week it was though for memorable moments and unforgettable photos in world football. Long will football fans remember the handball heard ’round the world, the pain and dejection on the Irish players faces and moments of pure passion and joy from other countries who will be playing their part in 2010. This weekend the EPL saw quite a few goals (34 by my count) including a 9-goal blitz by Tottenham v. Wigan. But another bizarre moment…

Thank god the Premier League is back. Nothing against international football, but there’s something very comforting with getting back into the ritual of watching Premier League football and being familiar with the surroundings, the pace of the game and the excitement it creates. So the Liverpool against Manchester City game on early Saturday was the perfect re-introduction to the Premier League. I found the first half not as boring as ESPN’s Tommy Smyth claimed it was. Sure, there were few chances, but the flowing football was easy on the eye which was punctuated by two…

When football pundits discuss Carlos Tevez, they often talk about his “work rate” and his “eye for the ball.” At times, though, the words “work rate” can morph into a backhanded compliment — as if those pundits are really saying, “He’s rubbish as a goal scorer, but boy, he sure works hard, doesn’t he?” Indeed, Tevez has only two goals in league play this season, and he has expressed his frustration over his sudden inability to finish. His infamous work rate, however, might be the primary reason Manchester City was able to score…

Tottenham 9 - Wigan 1 (Premier League, November 22, 2009) (All Spurs goals in the second half here and longer highlights here.) History was made at White Hart Lane as Jermain Defoe scored five second half goals as Spurs humiliated Wigan to record their highest top-flight win. Peter Crouch headed Spurs ahead, while Defoe scored from six yards after the break and then from a tight angle. An unmarked Paul Scharner replied but Defoe notched from eight yards and Aaron Lennon scored with a low strike. Defoe scored with two more crisp finishes, while Chris Kirkland scored an unfortunate own goal and…

Is Gabi Obertan the anti-Nani? Against Everton on Saturday the young Frenchman again impressed when brought on as a late substitute by Sir Alex Ferguson, after the match was already firmly in control of the Red Devils. Obertan neatly settled into his now familiar wide-left position, working in tandem with Patrice Evra in United’s all-Gallic left-side of their team. Without doing anything spectacular, Obertan used his cameo appearance to sure-up his reputation as a trustworthy left-side midfielder, while using every opportunity to streak forward using his lightning pace. Further,…

Regardless of how France got to the World Cup and whether they deserve to be there, the reality is that this summer, Les Bleus will be in South Africa with Raymond Domenech as their coach. I'm not really interested in revisiting Henry's goal or the resulting fallout from that, as its been covered very well by Laurie, Jeff, and Daryl. Instead, I'd like to discuss more practical matters. With the amount of talent France has, there is no fathomable reason that they should be completely outclassed by a weaker Irish side, and yet it did happen. Twice. And it's not just the Irish - so many times…

  • Sunderland 1-0 Arsenal : Undone away again

    22 Nov 2009 | 1:38 am
Last season a late equaliser saved our bacon at the Stadium of Light. Yesterday there was no bacon saving as Darren Bent's goal consigned us to our third defeat of the season. It was, it should be pointed out, the first time we've failed to score since a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford at the end of last season but our ability to concede was our undoing yesterday. I think many of us worried what would happen if we did have a day when we couldn't score. Were we solid enough defensively to cope? And yesterday showed how costly our tendency to concede cheapy is. It was, probably, Sunderland's only…

Obviously there was plenty about Thierry, Ireland and France and what have you at Arsene's press conference yesterday but I think enough has been said on here about it. The only thing I will comment on is his call for technology to be used to help referees. He said: They [FIFA/UEFA] have come out with a solution with one [referee] behind the goal, but the best one is technology. The biggest anger for me is that we are still in 2009, sitting here where millions of people see what happened but one guy doesn’t see…

The Mirror: Liam Brady last night branded Thierry Henry “shameful“ after launching a bitter attack on FIFA for fixing the outcome. Or did he? Leaving aside the fact we've had no Arsenal for two weeks the hysteria over last night's handball by Thierry Henry has been ludicrous. The ire of Ireland fans I can fully understand but the vitriol levelled at Henry from some quarters has been way over the top. Some have suggested that Henry's status as an Arsenal legend is tarnished because of this. It doesn’t take much for Italians to get into a pickle over the French. And so it was no surprise to find the old rivals demonised at every turn following Thierry Henry’s helping hand. You would have thought that Italian honour had been scorned - maybe it had in part, what with Giovanni Trapattoni in charge of the hard done-by Irish. It is pretty easy to paint a picture of what would have happened if Italy had been in Ireland’s position: match abandoned. Of course, it has been headline news ever since the final whistle in Paris and each of the three main sports papers – La Gazzetta…

Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni concedes it will be "impossible" to replay his side's World Cup play-off with France but the FAI is holding out hope after requesting the FIFA replay the match. Ireland’s World Cup dreams ended in controversial circumstances after Thierry Henry handled the ball twice in the build-up to William Gallas' crucial goal in the 1-1 draw in Paris. The crazy keeper cartwheeled back and forth along his goal-line as the opposition prepared to take their spot-kicks. Unfortunately for him the antics had little effect, and [...]

  • Slowly out of the shell: MLS Cup, Ireland and an Orange Future

    Martek
OK, after taking this week off to mostly just troll other blogs and not comment too much on MLS or soccer in general after letting last week’s loss sink in, I do have some thoughts on a rash of topics: (But before I begin, I have to tell you my favorite lines from anyone about events so far this week. Dan Loney, who is my absolute favorite blogger out there (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/blog.php?u=7720) said that a strike or lockout in February would “put the damn in Gotterdammerung.” Meanwhile, Bill Archer (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/blog.php?u=20531) on the Thierry Henry…

  • Orange in the stars

    Martek
I was starting to write a long piece on magical thinking and sending orange-colored positive waves westward for tonight's game. Then I read the stories in the Chron today (listing of the stories and Bernardo's blog post here) about how the entire world seems aligned against Dynamo in favor of the Galaxy, including Alexi Lalas (which actually fills me with something like relief. When that guy picks your team, you know you're in trouble.) And you know what I have to say to that? Well, take a look at that picture there, and instead of a sunrise, imagine a moonrise. As a long-committed magical…

  • News from the Peninsula - Giovanni Trap-ped as Thierry hands France a place in South Africa

    20 Nov 2009 | 4:00 pm
Poor old Trap. Killed by le hand of Thierry. The former Azzurri boss combined all of his 30-odd years worth of managerial guile to almost pull off a quite remarkable reverse in Paris. So near, yet so far. Giovanni Trapattoni will not be leading his Irish chargers to South Africa, and Henry's subsequent admission of guilt and the cries of injustice from all quarters will do little to appease any

    - Soccer-Football is dead. Rest in peace! Dear Soccer-Football Lovers, After having seen dozens of episodes in which the laws of the game were outrageously offended, I kept the hope that at least the top players in the world would have kept a little respect alive for the beautiful game. But after having seen one of my favorite players ever, Thierry Henry, handling the ball 2 times, TWO TIMES, like he was playing in a basketball game, adjusting the ball in front of him like after that he could have shot at the basket instead of a goal net, I reached my highest point of disgust! The intent of this Act was to allow Spanish companies to hire qualified personnel from other countries at a significant lower rate due to the lower tax rate, the cost which would actually be borne by the State. Without false modesty, I can say I was a good soccer-football player. Not unique or outstanding, just good. But, in one aspect I was unique: in 30 years, from 5 to 35 years old, not only was I NEVER expelled from the field, I NEVER had a yellow card and I played center forward in Italy! If you know what it means to play in that position in Italy, you’ll understand my accomplishment. I accepted every provocation verbal and physical that a defender could say or do to a center forward. And knowing that I would have scored anyway, I often had the ‘joy’ to be marked man (not zone!), by 2…
